Congrats to all the other 2018 Kindling Fund recipients! See you in 2018! kindlingfund.org Julie K. Gray's contribution to Influx, 4 large scale photographic prints on fabric from the Grandma series spark personal memories in the minds of viewers. “These images, taken in the home of my Latvian immigrant grandmother portray banal, un-peopled, domestic scenes. While specific to my grandmother, the objects within the scenes help create a sense of familiarity and comfort with the audience.” -Julie K. Gray ..And those objects succeeded, during the opening night of Influx, Julie and I were standing in the Pepperell Center of the Mill campus. Her monumental photographic prints suspended from the ceiling above us. A woman approached us insisting that she had stayed in that cottage before, referring to the interiors depicted in Julie's prints. "I remember that ironing board, that wallpaper"... and she continued to name items in the images. The objects within Julie’s prints had made a connection to her memory of a place. To this woman Julie's images were unequivocally of that cottage she visited long ago. See more from the Grandma Series and other work at www.juliekgray.com. Julie's prints are on view at The Pepperell Center until Sept. 30th 2017.
